This page is for rating all of the movies that were made off of books and then to either gush over the amazing-ness of the film or vent over the utter disappointment of the movie.
Movies.
I have a bit of a grudge against book movies.
They completely murdered Inkheart, which was a great series, turning it into the kind of plot you forget about the next morning.
They are to blame for turning Edward Cullen (Twilight) into a creepy stalker.
They are to blame for turning Edward Cullen (Twilight) into a creepy stalker.
They are also to blame for making Vampire Academy a cheesy, roll your eyes and sigh heavily kind of movie.
But through all of this we must remember the bright lights, such as
The Vampire Diaries (TV show)
The Fault in Our Stars
Catching Fire
Harry Potter and the...All of Them
Turned into a Movie from A to Z with Ratings
Beautiful Creatures
My Rating: 2 /5
Notes: If I had seen the movie first I would not have read the book. The movie was not bad, but it simply did not do the book justice. It's always a bad move when you change the ending so as to only have to make one movie.
The Book Thief
My Rating: 3/5
Notes: If I had seen the movie first I probably would have liked the movie more. It's hard to make a phenomenal book like this into a really good movie. Death narrating the book was hard on the movie and I found the narrator they chose patronizing, as if he were reading a children's story to a group of pre-school kids. The movie lacked emotion and the intricate history of the people in this town they live in was lost on the movie. Though I found the movie to be lacking depth I have to remember I am comparing it to The Book Thief which was so deep you probably could have fallen inside and been lost forever in a pit of black depth-ness, while in the movie it was only deep enough that you would have fallen in, gotten a few scratches and then eventually would have climbed to the top.
City of Bones
My Rating: 3/5
Notes: This one basically has the same problems as Beautiful Creatures. They changed the ending so that they couldn't make anymore movies. It wasn't a bad movie, but definitely not as entertaining or as fun as the book.
Divergent
My Rating: 4/5
Notes: The movie followed the book pretty well, the casting was fantastic, and just the overall movie made me happy. It was action packed, understandable, and captured the vision of the book really well.
The Fault in our Stars
My Rating: 4.25/5
Notes: This movie was so close. Honestly, I loved it. They only changed what was necessary, the cast was a-maz-ing, the emotion was strong. It was just really great. The only reason this is not a 5 star is because I'm also comparing to the book. The book was just so internal and extremely well written and there are just some things you cannot convey through film. Although the movie was brilliant, in my opinion the book was just exceptional. Exceptional and inspired, and it's kind of hard to live up to that expectation.
Harry Potter and the... I'm just going to do all of them.
My Rating: 3.75/5
Notes: Alright, please once again note that I am averaging all of the Harry Potter movies scores' so some were above 3.75 and some were below 3.75. The majority of the movies followed pretty closely to the books, probably because if the movies hadn't followed it closely, Harry Potter fans from around the world would have risen up and eaten anyone who had anything to do with the movies. This series of movies is the kind that you can sit down and watch without having ever read the books and be completely entertained. So overall I would say they were a success.
The Host
My Rating: 3.5/5
Notes: Okay, so this was a strange experience for me. *looks out windows to make sure no one is watching and lowers voice* I actually liked the movie better than the book. Don't shoot! I know, I know, how can I call myself a rightful book lover if I liked a movie better than fine, printed words on crisp, white paper? Well, let me explain, I felt like the book dragged on a a lot and was very slow. I'm into science fiction, but the book just did nothing for me. There was no action, the romance was thin, and it felt like they were really just going on long, ranting explanations the whole book. The movie added action and romance and only explained what was necessary! The book was not good, but the movie wasn't horrible.
The Hunger Games...and Catching Fire...and Mockingjay...Parts 1 & 2
My Rating: 3.75/ 5
Notes: Now, please remember this is an averaging of all four movies. Some of the movies were a little below 3.75, some were a bit above. Book wise, the first was the best and it just went down hill from there. Movie wise, the first was the worst, the second was the best, and the last two were...*whispers* better than the book (I'm sorry! I said it! Don't hurt me, please! It doesn't happen often but in this case the last book was slightly incoherent and borderline depressing, but the movie totally healed my bitter heart and really did what it could to make it not so...like the book was.) Overall, the movies were enjoyable and fun to watch.
I am Number Four
My Rating: 3/5
Notes: The movie was just okay. The book was just so much better. It's one of those movies that I wouldn't recommend watching unless you've read the book. It won't be confusing if you don't, but the end of the first book and the movie leave you with a cliffhanger or and un-closed ending of sorts. The only difference really is that there is a second book, but no second movie.
Twilight
My Rating: 2/5
Notes: No. Just no. Edward Cullen may have been brooding, overprotective, and slightly annoying, but this was just creepy. The whole movie was a little creepy. The actors weren't my favorite, the iconic lines seemed kind of empty and... well... like I said, creepy. It just wasn't a very good adaptation of the book.

The Vampire Academy
My Rating: 2/5
Notes: This did not make me happy. At. All. It cheapened the book. I wasn't even entertained. I was cringing throughout most of it. I really liked the Vampire Academy book series, it was entertaining with depth and whit. The movie was just cheesy. It made me sad. *big sigh of disappointment* What they should have done was make this into a TV series. It's a supernatural world with action and forbidden romance set in a high school. Is that not just screaming TV series?
The Vampire Diaries
My Rating: 4/ 5
